O que é um modo?What is a mode?

A mode is a seven-note scale defined by its pattern of whole and half steps from the tonic. What sets one mode apart from another is not the notes themselves, but which one acts as “home” (the tonal center).

Modos relativosRelative modes

Compartilham as mesmas notas, mas têm tônicas diferentes. Dó Jônio, Ré Dórico e Mi Frígio usam só teclas brancas. Útil para entender de onde vêm as notas. They share the same notes but have different tonics. C Ionian, D Dorian and E Phrygian use only white keys. Useful to understand where the notes come from.

Modos paralelosParallel modes

They share the same tonic but have different notes. C Ionian and C Dorian. It is the best way to hear each mode’s character, because only a few degrees change.

Most common trap: a mode is not “the major scale starting on another note”. If the harmony and bass keep pointing to C, the ear keeps hearing C major. To hear D Dorian, the music must establish D as the center, with a drone, a vamp or a repeated bass note. That is why this module plays everything over the tonic.

If you start on Lydian and lower one note at a time, you reach the other modes. Each step makes the sound a little darker.

Harmonia modalModal harmony

Modos pedem vamps estáticos (i – IV, I – ♭VII) em vez da cadência V–I, que arrastaria o ouvido de volta ao tom maior.Modes call for static vamps (i – IV, I – ♭VII) rather than the V–I cadence, which would drag the ear back to the major key.

O uso atual (jazz, pop) é uma simplificação do século XX.The names come from ancient Greece, but the Greek scales do not match the modes of the same name used today. Medieval modes (plainchant) emerged around the 9th century, with 8 modes defined by finalis, range and reciting tone. In 1547, Heinrich Glarean, in the Dodecachordon, proposed 12 modes, adding Ionian and Aeolian, which would become the major and minor of tonal music. Today’s usage (jazz, pop) is a 20th-century simplification.
